Affirming support
Support for LGBTQ+ Survivors
Recognize identity-based abuse and find domestic violence support that respects sexual orientation and gender identity.
Abuse can target identity and community
An abusive partner may threaten to out someone, control medication or gender-affirming care, use incorrect names or pronouns, exploit discrimination, isolate a person from LGBTQ+ community, or claim that no one will believe the abuse. These are tactics of power and control, not relationship conflict.
You deserve affirming help
Ask programs how they protect confidentiality, house people of different genders, train staff, and handle names or identification that do not match. It is reasonable to seek another provider if a service is disrespectful or unsafe.
- Use a safer device to search for affirming local services
- Plan around medications, documents, clothing, and supportive healthcare
- Identify chosen-family members who can help without revealing your location
- Ask a national hotline for referrals if local options are limited
No identity causes abuse
Sexual orientation, gender identity, HIV status, transition, relationship structure, and past experiences never justify control or violence. Support should respect both safety and identity without forcing disclosure.
